Wantagh is a hamlet in the southeastern section of Hempstead on the South Shore of Long Island. The area is divided into North Wantagh and Wantagh. Before it became Wantagh it was known as Jerusalem South and Ridgewood and named after a Montauk chief. The community is home to mainly families and married couples.
Wantagh Union Free School District serves the area with 5 schools which are the Wantagh High School, Wantagh Middle School, Wantagh Elementary School, Forest Lake Elementary School, and Mandalay Elementary School.
